The Month In Grime – June

The Month In Grime - JuNE

It’s been yet another jam-packed month for grime. As a genre, it’s really difficult to think of a time that grime has been more popular around the country, with so many artists performing at the UK’s biggest festivals and even making a serious impact on people’s political opinions. As per usual, we have arranged our top picks for this month below:

Mr Dubz – Mango Kush – Chameleon Audio

Starting off with our pals over at Chameleon Audio with this debut release from 140 heavyweight Mr Dubz. The Sheffield-based producer takes on yet another new angle with this one, focussing more on vibrant melodic patterns and leads than his more usual crazy arrangement style. This whole EP is a great look for the Chameleon Audio movement who continue to impress throughout 2017.

1Forty – 1FGRM001

Another month, another new project. Leeds based label 1Forty have launched their debut release with 3 absolute weapons. Drax and 20-4 combine on ‘Square Route’, 9TRANE weighs in with a heavyweight remix of Badness and Killa P’s ‘Nuh Failer’. Finally, Hamdi rounds the release off in typical Hamdi fashion with ‘Criminal’, an absolute bubbler. The whole release is available now for free download:

Manga Saint Hilare ft Jammz – Young

Manga has been making some serious noise throughout 2017. He is often regarded as one of the most underrated and overlooked MC’s in the grime scene and because of that, we are even happier to see him finally receiving some of the credit he deserves. His latest track goes in on a calmer flex discussing young romance. He is joined by the ever ready Jammz whilst Lewi B provides the instrumental for one of our favourite grime anthems of 2017,

Creep N00M – Discomfort EP – Project Allout

As one of Russia’s hottest exports, there are few matching the work rate and output of Creep N00M at this current time. His latest EP comes to us courtesy of the almighty Project Allout, who haven’t applied the brakes once this year. This 7 track release allows Creep to really explore the darker side of his production with ‘Dead Cavalier’ and the VIP of ‘Triggah Riddim’ being immediate highlights for us. This one will be available to purchase from the 7th of July.

Izzie Gibbs – Yin Yang EP

Izzie Gibbs is without a doubt one of the strongest names to arise out of grime within the last 5 years. Since joining forces with Dice Recordings the young MC has gone from strength to strength and ‘Yin Yang’ optimises that hunger. His uniquely energetic flows and vocal tones are allowed to run wild across the whole project and yet however mad things get, Izzie remains in complete control of both cadence and speed. On a technical level, he is easily one of the strongest in the country right now and you can find out why by downloading ‘Yin Yang by clicking HERE’.

Rude Kid – Monsters EP

Over the years Rude Kid has established himself as grime production royalty who is already at legendary status alongside names such as Wiley and Dot Rotten. His brand new EP Monsters which features 6 instrumental classics shows he has no intention of slowing things down either. The full tracklisting includes the instrumental for his extremely popular collaboration with Ghetts ‘Banger After Banger’ as well as the instrumental for Wiley’s well renowned ‘Joe Bloggs’. You can check out the full minimix for the project here:

Opus – Marbles EP – White Peach

Opus is a name who has been on our radar for a hot minute now. As a producer, he focusses more on the darker, more dubwise style of 140 music. His latest EP with the ever present White Peach Records is certainly a statement of intent. The whole EP is incredible production wise, showcasing Opus’s uniquely chilling style of composition. Our favourite track right off the bat, however, has to be ‘Rimstone’ which is built around angrily choppy drum patterns and eerie string leads. You can check the full project below:

Skelecta – Princess Peach – Pear Drops

Pear drops have spent this year delivering absolute heaters so far. Their latest release comes alongside the multi-genre heavyweight Skelecta and what a combination it is! We hear Skelecta really work his grimier side, working magic with 8-bit synthesizers and distorted bass tones flying everywhere. The EP features 3 tracks and each one individually would do the business, together they form one of the strongest EPs of the year. You can check out the previews here:

Capo Lee & P Money – Mula

Capo Lee is one of my favourite MC’s working in grime music today. His laid back flow and witty personality have seen him rise through the grime ranks rapidly over the last two years. His most recent collaboration with hall of famer P Money is a seemingly new direction. Rather than a classic grime feel, ‘Mula’ is a more laid back trap-like roller with a moving video showing the story of money making gone bad. You can check the full video via SBTV here:

KXVU & Razor – Cub & Feng Vol. 1

Shameless plug time. Razor and I are very happy to finally have put together our first collaborative project entitled ‘Cub & Feng’. This EP is available now for free download and features four exclusive Razor vocals over KXVU instrumentals. With this project, we aimed to focus on our strengths as a producer and an MC and we are super happy with the result. You can check the full project here:

That’s all for this month. Be sure to check next time for July’s top 10 list.
