The Month In Grime – July

The Month In Grime - July
Another month passes and as ever a number of notable releases have emerged out of the grime scene. This month features a combination of the more underground names and those at the top of the pecking order, with a couple of highly anticipated returns.

Policy – Centre Of Earth

As the Chameleon Audio imprint grows and expands its roster, Policy has appeared as the next official release from the Walsall based label. His new EP entitled ‘Centre Of Earth’ encases everything Policy’s truly unique, dungeon-like bass driven sound is all about. Although the release is not available to purchase just yet, the full release is available to stream in its entirety via the link below!

Chemist RNS – Chemist RNS

Walsall seems to be slowly but surely making its stamp on the underground grime scene, this next release comes from resident and Triple S member Chemist RNS. Released almost as an update LP, ‘Numb showcases a large chunk of Chemist RNS’s latest production techniques and influences. Crammed with dance floor dynamite from start to finish we definitely recommend checking out this LP. The whole project is also available to purchase and stream via the link below:

Sukh Knight – Beast / Nightcrawler (White Peach)

As one of the most creative producers to ever touch the dubstep sound we all fell in love with, it’s really exciting to see Sukh Knight return with a grime revamp of his signature sound. ‘Beast’ is a sharp roller which would slide into any 140 set with ease, whilst ‘Nightcrawler’ has been receiving plenty of air play on stations such as BBC 1Xtra and Rinse.FM. White Peach seem to constantly supply the scene with top quality grime releases and as one of the few labels still pushing vinyl it’s great to witness.

Davinche – VinchOnacci

Following on from his return to the scene earlier in the year, Davinche has delivered another landmark vocal release. In the early years of grime Davinche was always seen as one of the scenes heavyweight producers so it’s great to see him emerging back into the limelight. This release includes solid vocals from household names in the grime scene such as Dot Rotten, Mez, Scrufizzer and many more.

Asiah & Toka – Unnamed (Toka VIP)

This was one of the tracks we had to get placed onto this list, despite having no plans for release as of yet, the track is awesome. The re-emergence of dubstep is such a refreshing addition to 140 based bass music. This is one of the hybrid tracks that bridges the gap perfectly and we keenly await a release date.

Ice Kid – 11

It seems to be a month of big returns. Since reappearing for the first time in years at Culture Clash, Ice Kid has been the name on the scenes tongue, especially after releasing a new video out of the blue to SB.TV out of the blue to great effect. 11 features a number of credible artists including grime godfather Wiley and former Eskibeat recordings fellow member Chip. The whole project flows nicely and is certainly a statement on Ice Kids return. The whole album is available to buy now via iTunes.

Mr Dubz – The Dragon – Project Allout

The ride seems to just go on and on with Project Allout this year as they bring impeccable release after impeccable release. The latest addition to their super impressive catalogue comes from Sheffield’s Mr Dubz. The title track for the EP ‘The Dragon’ has been receiving some serious air time on the major stations and is coupled with two classic powerhouse riddims in ‘Shadow’ and ‘Twister’. The whole EP will be available to purchase from the 26th of August and is also available to stream via the link below:

Gundam – Waifu (Album Preview)

It’s pretty common knowledge that Gundam’s soulful R&G chops are some of the best in the business. For the last few years Gundam’s signature sound has been tearing up radio stations and venue’s alike, so it’s about time he put an album together, and we’re super stoked on it! The full album will be available to purchase via Gundam’s bandcamp from August the 14th, although the whole project is available to preview below:

Neffa T – Tint

We’re always excited to see a new Neffa T release knocking around. This one entitled ‘Tint’ was released for free download via his SoundCloud page earlier in the month. Don’t be fooled by the low velocity intro as the track soon descends into synth based madness. Be sure to check it out here:

Drime – View Point

Drime is a producer we have been watching keenly. As part of the Hexagon Dubs collective his sound ranges from aggressive choppy 8 bar grime riddims to the deeper vibes you can feel in his latest free release ‘View Point’. A pounding sub bass drives the entire track, coupled with hypnotizing high end chimes and unpredictable snare patterns, this one is definitely recommended.

Noble – Screwdriver

And last but not least we at Southpoint have added to our string of strong EP releases. This most recent release from Brighton based producer Noble may well be our strongest remix release to date. With Dubzta, Distinkt, Drax and KXVU (myself) all taking refixes into their own hands the project is jam packed with 5 powerhouse instrumentals sure to rock any grime set. The full project will be available to purchase from July 28th.

• You can also catch KXVU’s selection live on www.trickstarradio.com from 4-6PM GMT every Thursday.
